Two-Legged Stool
A two-legged stool from one side of the mirror, and a three-legged stool from the other side—the impossible stool, inspired by a statement about the future of Hong Kong
The piece is inspired by how, in 1984, the then Chinese leader, Deng Xiaoping, stated that negotiations on Hong Kong’s future were not some kind of “three-legged stool” – between Beijing, London and Hong Kong – but a two-legged one, with Hong Kong having no place in them.
